Intro to Blacksmithing

Do you enjoy watching 'Forged in Fire'?  You can learn the ancient technique of Blacksmithing from Forge and Fire Winner, Josh Fisher. Josh was the winner of the Sledgehammer competition which aired June 9, 2021. Josh will teach you all you need to know in this 4-week class Intro class. Participants will make a small knife by heating metal in a forge then shaping it on an anvil. Students will begin with a rectangular piece of metal, then through a series of forging and hammering they will end up with a small, curved knife.  

The 3-hour Intro Blacksmithing class is offered two times: 20:30 - 5:30 OR 5:45 - 8:45 pm. This class will take only a maximum of 6 students, so register early! All supplies and use of equipment are included in this unique and authentic class.

No class week of Thanksgiving.

Make a leather knife case in our one-day Leather Knife/Hatchet Case Workshop.  Bring your knife or hatchet and make a leather case to fit for only $35.  There are many offerings for this workshop. Check them out at:

Josh Fisher teaches how to custom design a professional looking Chef Knife. In the Chef knife class, emphasis is on detailing a knife. Students will cut and grind, heat-treat, then finish with a wooden handle. No forging.  All supplies included.

LARGE OUTDOOR/CAMPING KNIFE

The Large Outdoor Knife involves forging, hammering, and grinding to create a large knife which can be used for hunting, camping or any outdoor activity.  Students will make a wooden handle with a brass guard at the top of the handle. This ia an advanced class and has a prerequisite of one of the other Blacksmith courses. Intro to Blacksmithing, Chef Knife, or the Tomahawk Hatchet.  all supplies are included.

TOMAHAWK  HATCHET and BOTTLE OPENER

Tomahawk Hatchet Workshop

Ages 18 and older, Tuesday, 5:45 -8:45 p.m. (3 hr)

$120 for non-members per 2-week session

Want to try Blacksmithing without committing to a 4-week class. Try this 2-week workshop where you'll forge a tomahawk hatchet by forging and pounding a metal railroad tie into an ax blade. Finish by making and attaching a wooden handle.

No experience necessary.  All supplies and use of equipment included.  Maximum of 6 students so sign up early!

BLACKSMITH BOTTLE OPENER 

Ages 18 and older, Mondays

5:30 – 7:00 p.m. & 7:15 - 8:45 p.m. (2 weeks) 

$40 for non-members
$36 for members 

In this 1.5 hour class, participants forge a bottle opener by heating metal in the forge and shaping it on the anvil. Two different workshops are offered on the same night.  Register for either 5:30 - 7:00 pm or 7:15 - 8:45 pm. Maximum 4 students per workshop.

LEATHER KNIFE/HATCHET CASE WORKSHOP

Ages 18 and older, Saturdays and Tuesdays

$60 for non-members
$54 for members 

Make a case for your knife or tomahawk hatchet you made in one of our Blacksmithing classes or another knive.  Cut the leather to fit, stamp creative designs on it and dye it  All supplies included. Bring your knife or hatchet with you to class.  Class is taught by our Leatherworking instructor, Kate Miller.

Instructor:  Joshua Fisher

Joshua is a trained carpenter and a seasoned woodshop instructor, having taught woodworking for over 10 years.  He has taught numerous Woodworking classes for Tri-county Woodcraft in Springdale and currently teaches private lessons in his home studio.  Joshua also teaches Blacksmithing once a month to veterans in the Wounded Warrior program.  He takes great pride in helping the veterans learn new and useful skills.

Joshua brings his vast experience to ArtsConnect where he teaches Woodworking and Blacksmithing classes for adults.

Class Cancellations & Weather Closings

A minimum of four students must be enrolled for the session prior to the stated deadline for the class to take place (maximum 12 students). The Springfield Township Senior and Community Arts Center follows Finneytown School District inclement weather closings. To verify closings, call 513-522-1154. 


Due to costs incurred in planning for art classes, full refunds will only be issued when the Arts Council cancels the class. Class cancellations made within 10 business days of the class start date are eligible for a refund, minus a $5 administration fee per student. Refunds will be made by check, not to a credit card. To notify us of a cancellation, please send an email to artsinfo@springfieldtwp.org.
