Instructor: Kendall Glover
Kendall is a woodworker from Lincoln Heights. He is inspired to make functional items that celebrate and pay homage to the richness of the African American experience. He has produced whimsical and Afro-futurist items such as: cutting boards influenced by the Gee's Bend Quilters, stair railings and posts inspired by Thomas Day, and wall shelves that would fit nicely in any home in Wakanda. Kendall was honored to have one of his original cabinets highlighted in a New York Times article. The cabinet was called King Djoer, based on the Egyptian Pharaoh. It was part of a special exhibit"Show Us Your Wall" featuring the work of Patrick McCoy.
Kendall was trained as a union carpenter in Chicago focusing on interior structures; custom doors, stairs, and windows. He eventually began making unique furniture. He completed a two-year program at the University of Chicago called "Protecting the Art Collection". This program enhanced his skill in presenting, mounting, crating and preserving art.
Kendall teaches all of our Woodshop classes. He focuses on safety and helping the students to feel comfortable and confident on the equipment.
