Woodshop Classes and Workshops

WORKSHOP CLASSES START BACK JANUARY 2024

Due to the flood, we are unable to offer our Intro Woodshop, Woodshop 2 or Woodshop Workshops that require large equipment: Beginner, Advanced and Teen Workshops. We will be back at the arts center for classes in January 2024. Sorry for the inconvenience. We look forward to seeing you back at the arts center in July. Meanwhile, we are offering Lathe Workshops and many other classes at Brent Elementary. Please check out the website for other offerings.

LATHE CLASSES AVAILABLE

We are offering Wood Lathe Workshops at our temporary location of Brent School.  The Lathes are portable, so we are able to bring them to the school.  We have added many new Lathe Workshops.  Please check them out on this page.

ArtsConnect offers numerous woodshop classes in our newly renovated woodshop. Learn to use various equipment properly and efficiently. The Intro class uses a wide-range of equipment while learning to work safely. Once you have learned the basics, then take our Advanced class to learn more difficult techniques. 2-week Workshops give a sampling of how to use individual pieces of equipment.

Teen & Advanced Workshop Instructor:  Kendall Glover

Kendall is a woodworker from Lincoln Heights. He is inspired to make functional items that celebrate and pay homage to the richness of the African American experience. He has produced whimsical and Afro-futurist items such as: cutting boards influenced by the Gee's Bend Quilters, stair railings and posts inspired by Thomas Day, and wall shelves that would fit nicely in any home in Wakanda.  Kendall was honored to have one of his original cabinets highlighted in a New York Times article.  The cabinet was called King Djoer, based on the Egyptian Pharaoh. It was  part of a special exhibit"Show Us Your Wall" featuring the work of Patrick McCoy.

Kendall was trained as a union carpenter in Chicago focusing on interior structures; custom doors, stairs, and windows. He eventually began making unique furniture. He completed a two-year program at the University of Chicago called "Protecting the Art Collection". This program enhanced his skill in presenting, mounting, crating and preserving art.

Kendall teaches all of our Woodshop classes.  He focuses  on safety and helping the students to feel comfortable and confident on the equipment.
