Springfield Township will see its very first sculpture installed this year, made possible through a grant award to ArtsConnect by the Ohio Arts Council Arts Resiliency Initiative. ArtsConnect is managing the project and has selected artist Micah Landers to design and construct his vision of "The Many Sides of Charley Harper". Ohio based artist, Andy Flinn will assist in the completion of the project.
When the announcement of the sculpture was first made, the public was invited to participate in a vote for critical design elements. 604 votes were cast to choose a series of four iconic artworks by Charley Harper, which will be the focal point of the final sculpture. Charley Harper's son Brett Harper shared, "the community definitely got this right! The four images selected are among the most recognizable paintings and are the perfect symbols in our hometown of Springfield Township." Voters selected "Ladybug", the deer featured in Animals in America's National Parks - children's activity book,
"Cardinal Closeup" and the "Cool Carnivore" tiger .
Charley Harper Signs Limited Edition Prints
Charley Harper, who raised his family with his wife Edie in Springfield Township for over sixty years, was a world-renowned modernist artist. His work is exhibited in art galleries and museums worldwide. He is best known for his highly stylized wildlife prints, posters and book illustrations and is considered to be one of the 20th century's most recognizable and iconic designers. Celebrating Charley's legacy in Springfield Township brings attention to the arts and vibrancy the arts bring.
ArtsConnect is not releasing the design to the public until the sculpture is installed, but promises the 8 foot piece will be eye catching. Landers was selected by the art committee for his unique design concept. Charley Harper's son, Brett Harper was involved in the selection process and shared, "Micah's design was so unique; not
just a three dimensional replica of my father's work, but a visual experience. He was the perfect choice for this project and I am very excited to see such a work of art permanently installed where I grew up."
Sculpture Artist, Micah Landers
Micah Landers was introduced to metal craft and structural engineering as a child in the workshop of his grandfather's welding and fabrication business. He has been apprenticing with Douwe Studios for three years, where he collaborates with artist Douwe Blumberg in designing and completing large-scale sculptural work for private collectors and public memorial sites across the United States and the globe. Micah is currently developing a line of custom sculpted furniture, themed around nature scenes from this region. The Harper project has structural engineering oversight by the firm Chuck Lysaght and Associates.
The community will be invited to a dedication ceremony in early October with an opportunity to see and learn more about the sculpture.
